Summer Pool Safety

Written by Dr. Pia Boben Fenimore

Pools are about to Open!  Drowning is the leading cause of injury related death in children ages 1-4 years.  Here is how everyone can prevent summer fun from leading to tragedy:

  • Around water, small children should always be within arm’s reach

  • Never allow anyone to swim unsupervised

  • Wear safety approved life vests when learning to swim or on any type of watercraft; however, even with these children need to be watched constantly

  • Be certain that home pools and hot tubs are surrounded by appropriate fencing that is at least 4 feet high and has a child proof latched gate

  • Children over the age of 4 should learn to swim. The American Academy of Pediatrics says that children can begin to learn to swim any time after age 1

  • Pay attention to warnings about undertow and rough waters at lakes and beaches

  • Follow height and age restrictions and other safety measures at waterparks

  • Adults and teens should be encouraged to get CPR certified so they are ready to intervene in the event of an emergency
