Gun Safety in the Home

In any house that may have children around, it is very important that guns are stored properly to ensure safety of all. The American Academy of Pediatrics and the National Rifle Association both offer advice about gun safety. Here are the main points from these resources:

  • Store guns unloaded and separate from ammunition

  • Ensure that guns are locked and out of reach of unauthorized people, especially teens and children

  • Never store guns in glove compartments or other places easily accessed by children

  • Consider temporarily storing your guns outside of the home (such as with a trusted friend, bank lock box, etc.) if you have someone living with you who has mental health concerns such as depression

  • Avoid toys that look like real guns

  • Ask friends and relatives where your child is spending time if they have guns in the home and if they are stored properly.

  • The Lancaster City Police offers free gun locks to gun owners.

For more information on firearm safety or unwanted firearm removal, residents are invited to call the Lancaster City Bureau of Police at 717-735-3301.
