Why is Benzene a Concern?

Benzene is a chemical used in a variety of products including cleaning supplies and dyes. Most common exposure comes from airborne pollutants such as cigarette smoke, car emissions, and burning coal. It can be an unintended biproduct of benzoyl peroxide a safe medication used to treat acne.

Long term exposure to benzene has been linked to cancer and blood disorders in humans, and although very rare, it is recommended that we limit our exposure when possible.

Store owners have been instructed to remove the above products from shelves, but parents should check to ensure their teens do not currently have any of these in use.

People concerned about benzene exposure should consider using other topical medications for acne, such as salicylic acid, azelaic acid, or topical retinoids.
